Building Learning Power

At Barley Hill we place learning at the heart of all that we do and we believe it is vitality important to help our pupils to become better learners, both in school and out. We do this through Building Learning Power (B.L.P.).

We believe B.L.P. helps prepares our pupils for life as it gives them the skills to be tenacious and resourceful, imaginative and logical, self disciplined and self-aware, collaborative and inquisitive.

Professor Guy Claxton suggests that there are four key learning dispositions:

Resilience

Resourcefulness

Reflectiveness

Reciprocity/social relationships.

At Barley Hill we have adapted and are introducing these dispositions (Learning Powers) to the children and using 'Learning Heroes' to model what each disposition looks like.  This has helped us to create a culture in classrooms - and in the school more widely - that systematically cultivates habits and attitudes that enable our pupils to face difficulty and uncertainty calmly, confidently and creatively.  As a result, our pupils are becoming more confident in their own learning ability resulting in them learning faster and learning better. They concentrate more, think harder and find learning more enjoyable. 

Each of the 4R’s is made up of a number of learning behaviours, which we call learning capacities. These are summarised below. Because learning capacities are specific in nature, they can be individually trained, nurtured and focused on.

In 2013-14 we focused on Resilience; being ready, willing and able to lock into learning, knowing how to work through difficulties when the pressure mounts or going gets tough and Resourcefulness: exploring for answers, using our imagination, being confident to ask great questions and using existing knowledge make links with new knowledge. Our Learning Hero for Resilience is Tough Tortoise and for Resourcefulness it is ‘Sensible Squirrel'.

In Term 1 and 2 of this year we focused on Reciprocity: knowing when it’s appropriate to learn on your own or with others, and being able to put your view across in class discussions and circle times. Our Learning Hero for Reciprocity is ‘Team Ant’.

During Term 3 are focusing  on Reflectiveness; being  more strategic about our learning, planning, redrafting, and understanding  our strengths and weaknesses as a learner, and how to improve. Our Learning Hero for Reflectiveness is ‘Wise Owl’.

Questions you could ask:

Why not ask your child ‘how have you been challenged at school today?',  'what new things did you learn?' or ‘what good questions did you ask in your learning today?’ or you might ask ‘tell me what learning behaviours did you use’ ?

Sharing your experiences:

Share how you learn, be your child’s learning hero. Talk about the Reflectiveness and Wise Owl and  encourage those attributes at home and in other out of school activities such as swimming, sports and learning to ride a bike. Encourage your child to take responsibility for preparing for school.
